So what is TCM and how does Acupuncture work?
The 3 triad of Qi, Yin & Yang and Five Elements form the fundamental concepts of medical theories in Chinese Medicine. Yin and Yang are fundamental duality in the universe that is in constant force, opposing yet inseparable, complementary yet contradictory to each other - a duality that is ultimately unified. The balance of Yin and Yang result in the production of harmonious Qi which is an invisible energy field that flows harmoniously and freely in a healthy body. This energy field called Qi unleash the many ailments in our body that has been blocked or stagnant inside us.
The 5 Elements Theory is a symbolic representation of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water that correspond to the Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lung and Kidney respectively and has many interrelationships and interactions among them. In one of the relationships, Kidney the Water Element has to flow upwards to nourish the Heart. The Heart the Fire Element has to flow downwards to the Kidneys. However if the Kidney Yin energy failed to nourish the Heart, Heart Yin becomes deficient and Empty-Heat arise within the Heart will rise. This is a common situation in clinical practice in women during menopause manifesting as “hot flushes”.
In summary, the philosophy embracing TCM is based on inter-relationship, constant change, harmonious balance and relativity. Is like a big jigsaw puzzle that a TCM practitioner has to put together into a harmonious landscape.
The Qi, Yin and Yang and 5 Elements concepts are applied in the diagnosis and treatment of TCM in all disease state.
